Biography: Early Life and Family
Dr. Anthony Fauci has been the director of the NIAID (the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases) as well as a renowned immunologist. Dr. Fauci is best known as the Chief Medical Advisor to the President, a role he has held in both the Trump and Biden presidential administrations.
Fauci has come under fire for a number of reasons. At the onset of the pandemic, Fauci went on the record saying that masks didn’t work in preventing the transmission of COVID-19. Fauci has been accused of misleading the American public in a number of ways. This includes his about face concerning masks, comments regarding the level of danger the virus presented to the United States, the origins of the virus, and more.
Most recently, Fauci has drawn ire from the public after it was discovered the National Institute of Health – with whom Fauci has worked for years – funded research involving Beagle puppies.
Regardless of public opinion, Fauci is a regular presence on media regarding the pandemic. Although he has many critics, he has just as many supporters who take his advice seriously and follow it closely.
Early Life
Anthony Stephen Fauci was born in Brooklyn, New York on December 24, 1940. His parents were Stephen A. Fauci and Eugenia Lillian Abys Fauci. Fauci’s family owned and operated a pharmacy in the Dyker Heights area of Brooklyn. Stephen A. Fauci was a pharmacist, and Eugenia worked in the store as well. She operated the register along with Fauci’s sister.
Anthony Fauci would deliver prescriptions as a part of his family’s business.
The family home sat atop the pharmacy.
Fauci can trace his roots back to Italy. His grandparents on both sides of the family immigrated to the United States some time during the 19th century. His father’s family was from Sciacca. His mother’s parents came from Naples.
Although Fauci grew up active in the Catholic religion, he now considers himself a humanist. The American Humanist Association has named him their Humanist of the Year for 2021.
Fauci attended a private school in Manhattan, Regis High School. There he was a member of the basketball team. He graduated from the school in 1958.
Fauci would earn a Bachelor of Arts in the classics from the College of the Holy Cross, but, during his time at the college, he took classes that were considered pre-med. He then enrolled at Cornell University’s medical school, now known as the Weill Cornell Medicine. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1966; he was the top student in his class.
He would go on to complete an internship and residency at the Cornell Medical Center division of New York Hospital.
Personal Life
Anthony Fauci married Christine Grady in 1985. Grady was then a nurse and a bioethicist with the National Institute of Health. The pair met while treating a patient together.
The Faucis have three daughters: Megan, Jennifer, and Alison.
Fauci’s wife has come under fire, largely due to social media. According to information on the National Institute of Health’s website, Dr. Grady “(possesses) contributions . . . both conceptual and empirical and are primarily in the ethics of clinical research . . .”
Some critics believe that Dr. Grady’s position at the NIH puts her in a place where she can approve Dr. Fauci’s experiments – at least ethically. These same critics view this as unethical in itself.
These same critics then question the amount of money the Faucis may have made as incentives for research to be approved. A British research journal published in 2005 that Dr. Fauci as well as others at NIH were receiving royalties for their pharmaceutical work on HIV and AIDS. When questioned about said royalties, Fauci replied that he was required by law to receive said monies, but that he found this unethical personally. As a result, Dr. Fauci said that he gave any royalties to charities. It is possible that the Faucis could have done just this, and tracing the exact monies and any charities to which the couple may have donated the money is difficult.
Another outspoken critic of Dr. Fauci is the founder of the Children’s Health Defense, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. Kennedy once said in an interview that Fauci is an “absolute dictator,” claiming that “all (Fauci) does is develop new drugs and get us addicted to them.”
Kennedy has inferred that the Faucis have some financial interest in Moderna vaccines. However, it is important to note that there is no evidence to back this claim, and, as of this writing, Kennedy has presented no evidence that this claim is factual.

Fauci has worked in some form of a governmental agency throughout his career. He joined the National Institute of Health in 1968. In 1984, he took a job with the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases. He would eventually rise to the position of director of the agency.
Fauci has advised every president since Ronald Reagan. While he has been offered the position of director of the National Institute of Health multiple times, Fauci has turned down the offer each time. Between 2010 and 2019, Fauci earned $3.6 million via his salary.
Fauci’s financial disclosures do not list the true values of any investments the director of NIAID may possess. His disclosures only show losses or gains as well as dividend payouts. According to Yahoo Finance, Fauci does have an IRA, which is included in his net worth figures. He also invests in mutual funds, although there is no detailed list of those funds. It has also been reported that Dr. Fauci is in line for the largest Federal retirement package in U.S. History.
Financial disclosures obtained by Yahoo Finance show that Fauci has worked as an editor for publishing company MacGraw-Hill. During his time in this position, Fauci has received royalties totaling between $100,001 and $1 million. Fauci has worked in this fashion since 1983.
Career Outside of Politics
Fauci completed his residency in 1968. He soon took a job with the National Institute of Health via the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease. He was a clinical associate at that time. By 1974, Fauci had become the NIAID’s Laborator of Clinical Investigation’s head in the Clinical Physiology Section. By 1980, he had received an appointment as the chief of the Laboratory of Immunoregulation (also a part of the NIAID and NIH).
It was 1984 when Fauci became the director of the NIAID. This is his current position in addition to advising the last eight presidential administrations.
In the 1980s, when HIV and AIDS were new to the world, Fauci took on his initial advisory role. In the early 2000s, Fauci was a major contributor to the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief or PEPFAR. Fauci has advised the federal government with regard to the following infectious diseases: AIDS and HIV, COVID-19, MERS, SARS, Ebola, the Swine flu, and more.
Fauci was instrumental in helping to prepare vaccines for members of the military who might be affected by bioweapons. He also developed other medications that would treat the same type of issue.
Fauci’s career often puts him in an advisory role, but Fauci has devoted most of his life to research. He has carried out numerous studies on the human immune response. He has been recognized for his research involving delineating the mechanisms whereby immunosuppresive agents adapt to the human health response.
Fauci was instrumental in developing treatments for granulomatosis with polyangiitis, polyarteritis nodosa, and lymphomatoid granulomatosis. At one time these diseases were fatal, but now respond to treatment based on Fauci’s work.
Fauci has done a great deal of work regarding HIV and AIDS. Fauci’s research showed how HIV would progress into the AIDS virus and destroy the immune system of the human body. Fauci’s work would lead to a vaccine that is intended to prevent HIV infection as well as therapeutics for those with HIV. Fauci himself has said that his career has been defined by HIV and AIDS.
The Institute for Scientific Information said, between 1983 – 2002, Dr. Fauci was the thirteenth-most cited scientist among the nearly 3 million authors who were published in scientific journals.
Career in Politics
While some view Fauci chiefly as a scientist, his advisory role for many presidential administrations involves him in the realm of politics.
In addition, most people associate Fauci with the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Fauci has been advising presidents and working with the federal government for decades – through HIV and AIDS, through Ebola, through SARS, and now through the pandemic.
Fauci was a member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force under Donald Trump. He took this position in January 2020. Today, he is the Chief Medical Advisor to the president.
Throughout 2020 and 2021, Fauci has become the face of the scientific community, and he makes regular rounds on a variety of political talk shows on all cable news channels.
Fauci has been asked to comment on everything from the 2020 police brutality riots to the January 6 incident on Capital Hill to the Trump Administration response to the pandemic.
Fauci’s penchant for public speaking is often the source of disdain from his critics. Many have called for Fauci to be fired. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) has taken Fauci to task many times. Paul and others in Congress maintain that Fauci lied to Congress, but there have been no indictments to that effect.
Fauci’s presence in the spotlight is not likely to burn out any time soon, even if the pandemic becomes an endemic.
