While Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi was on the East Coast, her husband, Paul, was involved in an automotive crash. He was later arrested on suspicion of Driving while Under the Influence. Paul Pelosi was arrested overnight Saturday, and he was released Sunday morning.
According to TMZ’s report, Paul Pelosi was involved in a car crash on Saturday night. At 10:26 pm, the California Highway Patrol received a phone call regarding a two-car crash in the Napa area. (TMZ cites a collision report as their source.) Napa County is located in Northern California, although the Speaker represents the area including San Francisco in Southern California.
According to the report, Paul was driving his 2021 Porsche when his vehicle was hit by a Jeep. No one was injured in the crash, but, upon investigation, CHP officers would arrest Mr. Pelosi at 11:44 pm on Saturday, May 28.
Police records show that Pelosi was attempting to cross State Road 29 when he was hit by the Jeep. The police report does not place blame on either driver, however. The report did show that the driver of the Jeep was not arrested. Specifically, Pelosi was in Yountville in Napa County, and he was approaching an intersection of SR-29 and Walnut Lane. Pelosi drove his Porsche into the intersection, where he was hit by the Jeep.
The police report offered no other specifics.
The reports show that Mr. Pelosi was booked into the Napa County Jail on two misdemeanors charges. One is for DUI, or driving under the influence. The second charge is for driving with a blood alcohol content level of 0.08 or higher. Bail was set for the charges at $5,000.
Napa County records show that Mr. Pelosi was booked into jail at 4:31 a.m. Sunday morning. The records also show that he was released that same morning at 7?26 a.m.
Paul and Nancy Pelosi have been married since 1963. Paul Pelosi is 82 years old.
Mrs. Pelosi was out of town at the time of her husband’s alleged arrest. Late last week, Pelosi was tasked with speaking at the commencement of Brown University.
When her office was contacted for a comment on the arrest, a spokesperson said, “The speaker will not be commenting on this private matter which occurred while she was on the East Coast.”
Mrs. Pelosi was in Rhode Island when the incident occurred.
At present, it is unknown if anyone was with Mr. Pelosi at the time of the accident.
No one in the Pelosi family has publicly acknowledged the arrest. None of Pelosi’s children or any other immediate family have spoken publicly about the incident.
While the California Highway Patrol spokesperson Andrew Barclay told NPR “more information would be released on Sunday,” little else has been reported about the incident.
